12 Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs

Dogs are experts at begging, but some human foods can be genuinely dangerous. Keep these 12 out of reach.

  1. Chocolate. The most famous one, for good reason. Theobromine is toxic to dogs; dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the worst.
  2. Grapes and raisins. Even small amounts can cause kidney failure in some dogs. There is no known “safe” dose.
  3. Xylitol. An artificial sweetener in sugar-free gum, candy, some peanut butters, and baked goods. Extremely toxic — it can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage. Always check peanut butter labels.
  4. Onions and garlic. Raw, cooked, or powdered — they damage red blood cells and can cause anemia.
  5. Alcohol. Even small amounts affect dogs far more than humans.
  6. Macadamia nuts. Can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and fever.
  7. Avocado. Contains persin, which can upset dogs’ stomachs; the pit is also a choking hazard.
  8. Cooked bones. They splinter easily and can injure the mouth, throat, or gut.
  9. Caffeine. Coffee, tea, and energy drinks are all off-limits.
  10. Raw dough with yeast. It expands in the stomach and produces alcohol as it ferments.
  11. Excessively salty foods. Chips, pretzels, and cured meats can lead to sodium issues, especially in small dogs.
  12. Fatty scraps and fried food. Not toxic, but a common trigger for pancreatitis — a painful and serious condition.
